Meet our ambassador and trustees

The Pennies team is supported by our fantastic ambassador and governed by a board of trustees who are all volunteers.  Our trustees are responsible for the overall direction and development of Pennies through good governance and clear strategic planning, ensuring that we are well run and delivering our charitable objectives.  The skills, expertise and support provided by our ambassador and trustees from across the retail, payments, charity and business sectors help make Pennies a success.

Sir Martyn Lewis CBE

Sir Martyn’s in-depth knowledge of, and standing in, the UK voluntary sector spans over 30 years, and combined with his respected career in journalism makes him the perfect Ambassador for Pennies, for which neutrality and transparency are core values.

Our trustees

Robert Leitão, Chair of Trustees

Head Global Financial Advisory, Rothschild

Robert’s experience is primarily in mergers and acquisitions for public companies, and ranges from recommended deals to hostile offers and defenses across a variety of sectors.  Prior to joining Rothschild in 1998, Robert was at Morgan Grenfell & Co in London where he was appointed a Director in 1995.  He qualified as a chartered accountant with Peat Marwick Mitchell & Co (KPMG) in 1987. Robert holds a degree in Engineering from Imperial College London.

Peter Ayliffe

Non-Executive Chairman, Monitise Group

Peter Ayliffe is Chairman and Non-Executive Director of Monitise, a leading mobile banking and payments group that provides services to more than 350 financial institutions and other leading brands globally.  Until September 2013, Peter was President and CEO of Visa Europe for seven and a half years and prior to Visa Europe, Peter spent over 30 years in retail banking.  He has also been on the board of Investors In People (UK) and is currently President of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and a Non-Exective Director on the board of Coventry Building Society.

Ian Filby

CEO, DFS

As CEO of DFS, Ian brought a fresh approach to the furniture store resulting in an increase in EBITDA from £72m to £89m. Prior to DFS, Ian enjoyed a number of Buying and Marketing roles at Boots, culminating in his appointment to the Boots Executive 10 years ago, as Trading Director. In 2014 Ian became Chairman of the BRC Policy Board and Shoe Zone PLC.

Penny Lovell

Head of Private Client Strategies, Close Brothers

Penny is Head of Private Client Strategies at Close Brothers, a leading specialist financial services group providing advice and investment management solutions.  Penny was formerly Managing Director in the Private Banking & Trust business at Rothschild.  Penny is a Trustee of Royal Academy Schools, and of the Prince’s Foundation for Children and the Arts; she is a member of the UK Advisory Board for Room to Read and sits on the Development Board of the Philharmonia Orchestra.

Julian Taylor

Partner, Simmons & Simmons

Julian is a partner of the international law firm Simmons & Simmons, where he is the International Head of Employment and sits on the firm’s Executive Committee. He provides advice to a wide range of clients, principally institutions in the financial services industry. Earlier in his career, he practised as a barrister for five years and worked as a teacher. He is also a trustee of vInspired and is involved in a mentoring scheme for charity chief executives.

Mark Anderson

Executive Vice President, Customer, Virgin Atlantic

Mark Anderson was appointed Executive Vice President, Customer, Virgin Atlantic in February 2017, having previously been Managing Director of Virgin Holidays.  He joined the business in 2005 and joined the Management Board in 2008 as Customer Director. During this time he assumed responsibility for the rapid expansion of the Virgin Holidays retail network.  Mark has over 20 years’ cumulative experience in the customer arena, including senior management and operational roles in the retail sector and with BAA.

Graham Edwards

Chief Executive, Telereal Trillium

Graham has been the Chief Executive of Telereal Trillium since 2001, when he led the joint venture which set up the company.  Before joining Telereal, Graham was Chief Investment Officer of Talisman Global Asset Management.  Prior to that, he was a fund manager at Merrill Lynch Investment Management and also worked for BT Group plc.  He read Economics at Cambridge University and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), the Association of Corporate Treasurers (AMCT) and the UK Society of Investment Professionals (ASIP).

Simon Jones

Senior Consultant, Chime Group

Simon specialises in strategic and crisis communications and reputation management for governments, corporations, organisations and individuals around the world. He has advised chief executives and chairs of global firms, and managed complex and global communications campaigns for some of the world’s leading brands (including Barclays, BBC, BSkyB, Coca Cola, and Facebook).

Peter Nugent

Volunteer Finance Director, Pennies

Most recently Peter was the Finance Director of Puzzler Media Ltd, the UK leading puzzle magazine publisher and puzzle content provider. He joined in 1988 and was involved in all the company’s major strategic decisions, including disposals, acquisitions and mergers.  Peter was also involved in the Management Buyout in April 2002 and the secondary Management Buyout in December 2005. Peter has also held roles in Esso Petroleum Ireland and Arthur Young Ireland (now Ernst & Young).
