The Pennies Foundation has appointed Simon Jones to its Board of Trustees. Simon, a leading consultant for Chime Communications, has provided strategic counsel to the Foundation since its inception, and his appointment as a trustee allows Pennies to benefit from the expertise that both Simon and the Chime Group companies can provide. The Chime Group is a public relations, advertising and communications group specialising in creating, managing and monitoring brands and reputations.
The Pennies Foundation has created Pennies, the electronic charity box, which gives customers the opportunity of making micro-donations by adding a few pennies to their purchases when they pay by card. All the money raised goes to charity. Since launch in November 2010 Pennies has received over 800,000 consumer donations through its retail partners, which include Domino’s Pizza, Travelodge, Zizzi and The Entertainer, raising over £180,000 for a total of 20 UK charities. The Rugby Football Union (RFU) is the latest organisation to come on board, and more will be announced during the remainder of the year.
Simon co-ordinates integrated communications campaigns across the Chime Group. He was formerly MD of Harvard Public Relations and over the last fifteen years has advised corporations in all aspects of communications, covering media relations, internal communications and broader communications strategies. He has engineered award-winning campaigns for high profile organisations including Vodafone, Sky, Sony and the BBC.
Simon commented, “Pennies is leading the way in bringing micro-donations to the masses. Giving just one extra penny on top of your card purchases can make a huge difference to charities nationwide and it is a real privilege to be working with the people making it all possible. I would urge Chief Executives and Marketing Directors at retailers around the country to look at the Pennies proposition and consider getting involved. Current retail partners have been bowled over by the simplicity of the channel, and the benefits not only for their CSR programme, but also in improving their customer relationships.”
Alison Hutchinson, Chief Executive of The Pennies Foundation said, “We are delighted to have formalised our relationship with Simon and we know we will continue to benefit from his expertise and connections. As well as giving us a wealth of invaluable advice, Simon has already introduced us to companies within the Chime Group, including Teamspirit and Fast Track that are providing Pennies with pro-bono support. This kind of support is vital to a growing charity and is really helping us to raise awareness of the micro-donations movement and the incredible opportunity it affords UK charities. We look forward to continuing our fruitful relationship with Simon and would like to thank him for all the informal advice and expertise he has provided already.”
