Last November was a busy month for Pennies, as we prepared to launch with a whole host of new retailers and celebrated our 2nd anniversary. Whilst that was going on, your pennies were being put to work nearly 300 miles away in Cumbria, where six families attended a Children’s Burns Trust Family Weekend at the Fire Fighters Charity Jubilee Therapy Centre near Penrith.

ChildKathryn-Walby-Pool-Irwin-048_resizedforweb-215x140ren’s Burns Trust has been a charity partner of Pennies for over two years and currently receives a percentage of donations made by customers at several of our retail and hospitality partners. So far this has added up to over £21,000 for the charity, helping ensure families with burn-injured children can attend the supportive and fun weekends like the one at Penrith.

This latest
weekend hosted eleven parents, six burn-injured children, twelve siblings, and fourteen burn care professionals! Parents got meet other families going through similar experiences, attended workshops on family stress following a burn injury, discussed treatment options and learnt relaxation strategies.

Meanwhile, the children got to enjoy arts and crafts, swimming and free play, as well as a day trip to Walby Farm Park and Wetheriggs Zoo and Animal Sanctuary. Both parents and children can use the weekend as an opportunity to spend some time together, as well as get to know other families and have some fun.

Getting to share experiences is something the children enjoyed the most. “It has helped me by showing my family that other people have been in the same situation as us,” said one child. The adults felt similar benefits and appreciated being “able tKathryn-Walby-Pool-Irwin-021_resizedforweb-215x140o talk to other parents who have been through the same situation and understand what we feel is normal.”

The family weekends happen twice a year and the annual cost of putting them on is £10,000. This means the money raised for Children’s Burns Trust from your charity so far could cover two years of these weekends.
