Brentford FC launched Pennies in July 2018, adding the digital charity box to the tills in the Griffin Park stadium shop and to the online store too. Since then, Bees fans have been donating to the Brentford FC Community Sports Trust when they purchase the latest kit and club merchandise.

Adding a 25p top-up donation to their purchases when paying by card or digital wallet, football fans have been especially generous on match days having raised hundreds of pounds to date for Brentford FC Community Sports Trust (Brentford FC CST).

The Trust was established more than 30 years ago and uses the power of sport to inspire and empower people from the local community. Today, your Pennies donations are helping fund a number of the Trust’s community projects.

Get Set is one such project, hosted by Brentford FC CST and run in conjunction with Ealing Young Carers. Together, the two charities provide young carers with a much-needed opportunity, and place to socialise as well as supporting them with training and developing skills for employment.

Ali, a young carer for his mum who joined the Young Carers programme when he was just 12, has grown in confidence and developed skills to set him up for the world beyond his role as a carer. Now 19, Ali has joined Ealing Young Carers as a volunteer mentor working with other young people who are in a similar situation. Ali said:

[The project] gives me an opportunity to learn about CVs, jobs, interviews, and how to present myself. It gives me a boost. My family think what I have been doing with young carers is a great way to express myself despite whatever I am going through, be it psychologically, emotionally, physically. My family know that I am safe and can learn a lot.

Since it began, the Get Set project helped increase participation in the Young Carers programme, from 25 young carers to nearly 200 who are now benefitting from emotional and educational support and sporting activities.

Lee Doyle, Chief Executive of Brentford FC Community Sports Trust, said:

Because of their caring commitments, young carers can often miss out on social opportunities that other young people take for granted. Through Ealing Young Carers, we are providing much-needed respite and support.
