The Pennies Foundation is on the search for a new intern.  Are you looking to make your first steps into the world of Charities and looking for a role that encompasses many different skills?  We are looking for an intern who will primarily be based within the Communications and Marketing department, but who will also be involved in work in other fields accross the foundation.  Interested?  Here are the details:

Role title: Communications and Marketing Intern

Contract: 6 months, full-time (up to 35 hour working week), paying up to £230 per week

Role purpose

The Communications and Marketing Intern reports to and supports the Head of Marketing & Communications in a range of tactical activities across marketing, media and social media, web site management, as well as elements of research, government relations and project management. The overall role purpose is to help the marketing and communications team deliver the wide range of tasks for which it is responsible.  In addition, there will be a requirement to support other members of the Pennies team in particular relating to the management of the charities which benefit from Pennies and operational and business development support where required.

Pennies is at a critical stage of its expansion, having launched in November 2010 to a very positive reception. Its unique nature and model need to be reflected into Pennies’ marketing, communications and stakeholder relations. The Intern is expected to manage a number of tasks at any one time, and to develop sound working relationships both internally and externally as appropriate. This is an ideal opportunity to obtain a broad range of experience and skills across all the functions of a relatively small, but quickly growing ‘start up’ charity.

Key responsibilities:


    •  Support the team in the delivery of marketing collateral for Pennies
    •  This can include taking responsibility for items in the marketing and communications work streams in specific implementation projects as new retailers come on board
    • Help prepare designs for presentations


    • Produce due diligence reports on organisations Pennies is involved with including the charities
    • Carry out other pieces of ad hoc research

Social Media:

    • Contribute to Pennies’ social media strategy (already active via Twitter and Facebook) with emphasis on developing a presence on YouTube, Flickr and LinkedIn


    •  Help maintain website
    • Contribute to ensuring that the website is user-friendly, informative and reflects accurately Pennies’ evolution and development
    • Drafting and uploading content to both website and blog


    • Drafting of newsletters and press releases Media tracking management

General Support:

    • Provide administrative support to other senior members of the Pennies team as required, covering such areas as charity relationship management, operations and business development.

Required competencies


    • Degree-level educated
    • Excellent oral and written communications skills
    • Exposure to digital communications, in particular the WordPress content management system and various channels of social media
    • Knowledge of marketing basics
    • Good judgement, positive attitude and desire to contribute


    • Degree area related to CSR/marketing/communications
    • Good creative judgement
    • Ability to identify and manage priorities
