Since 2011, customers have been able to donate to Northern Ireland Hospice, Horizon House, by rounding up their pennies.

Horizon House, the Children’s Hospice, is the only service of its kind in Northern Ireland. They care for children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions as well as supporting their families.

Horizon House has a warm family atmosphere where parents and siblings can spend time in a relaxing and fun environment. They remove the stress and strain of nursing care, allowing families to focus on each other and have the time to create special moments that they can always treasure.

Over £154,000 has been received to date from approximately 736,000 micro-donations through Pennies, allowing the Children’s Hospice to support babies like George and the Evans family.

George’s story

Two weeks before George was born, his parents were told that the link between the left and right side of his brain hadn’t formed properly. This meant he was very sick from birth, but being the little fighter he was, he improved for a while and was allowed to go home.

However, George’s condition deteriorated very quickly and he ended up back in the hospital.

Eventually, George’s parents were told that he was not going to get better and the family should spend his remaining time together. They were offered the opportunity to go to Horizon House where they would all be taken care of.

George had one to one nursing care; his sister and brother were entertained with cinema visits, arts and crafts or playing in the hydrotherapy pool. They had privacy when they wanted it, and time to spend with George to make memories and create special moments.

Without the Children’s Hospice, the family feel that they wouldn’t have any good memories of their last weeks as a family. After George passed away, the Hospice still continues to care for the Evans family, with home visits and bereavement support. A year and half later they still feel that the Hospice is there for them and still caring for their family.

How you can help

These are just a few ways Horizon House helps children and their families so that instead of worrying about being sick, families can spend their precious time enjoying life.

Just a day of micro-donations could help to fund Horizon House’s essential programmes, such as art and music therapy or bereavement support, turning digital small change into life-changing support. You can continue to help children like George and bring families joy by donating your extra pennies when ordering with Domino’s online and in-app or shopping at The Entertainer in Northern Ireland.
