Financial Accountant

Pennies is an award-winning charity at the cutting edge of fintech, working with some of the biggest brands in retail, hospitality and payments. Full-time, permanent position
Location: Hybrid – London (EC2M) / Remote
Reporting to: Finance Director

 

Role Description

This is a full-time hybrid role (2 days in the office) for a Financial Accountant. The Financial Accountant role is a newly created position and will be a key member of the Pennies team. The role will support the Finance Director, taking direct responsibility for all aspects of the day-to-day running of the finance function including financial reporting and accounting, MI, financial controls, and credit control. The Finance Officer, who deals with day to day financial processes, will report into this role.

It is an exciting opportunity for the successful candidate to get involved in all aspects of this dynamic, fast growth organisation, and to develop and broaden their skill base, contribution and career as operations move to scale.

Duties and accountabilities

  • Preparation of annual, monthly and periodic budgets, forecasts, and cashflow statements
  • Prepare monthly accounts
  • Supervision of Finance Officer
  • Processing gift aid claims
  • Preparation of annual statutory accounts in accordance with current accounting standards
  • Preparation and submission of annual returns to HMRC, Companies House and the Charity
  • Commission or its equivalent in Rep of Ire, and the Isle of Man
  • Liaison with auditors
  • Preparation of reports for various board meetings
  • Maintenance of operational documentation
  • Develop and maintain management information and financial dashboard reporting
  • Develop functionality and reporting capability of finance system (Sage Intacct)
  • Investigate operational issues and discrepancies working closely with the Systems Manager
  • Act as the primary finance contact with Pennies’ Partners
  • Cash management and treasury duties
  • Ensure that appropriate systems and internal controls are maintained
  • Ensure quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting
  • Manage payroll processing
  • Wider team support: Provide support for the wider team where necessary, working cross-functionally to help deliver our objectives

Experience and skills

Essential
  • 2+ years experience in a similar role
  • A formal accounting qualification (ACCA/CIMA/ACA)
  • Well versed in charity accounting
  • Strong IT skills including experienced in the use of Microsoft Office suite, in particular Excel
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Good people skills
  • Well organised, logical and detail focused
  • A willingness to work flexibly when required
  • Good organisational skills and will be able to develop and document business processes and accounting policies
Desirable
  • Experience with Sage accounting software, ideally Sage Intacct
  • Experience within the charity sector
  • Knowledge of the payment or retail sector

Board Support Assistant

Part-time (2 days a week), permanent position
Location: Hybrid – London (EC2M) / Remote
Reporting to: Office Manager and Executive Assistant to CEO

 

Role Description

Our work is supported and guided by a number of Advisory Boards.  We are seeking a part time Board Support Assistant (2 days per week) to take full accountability for the Pennies Advisory Board and sub groups, including providing the Chairs and board members with all necessary administrative and secretarial assistance. The Board Support Assistant will also provide general assistance to the Office Manager and EA to the CEO where required.

 

Duties and accountabilities

  • Liaising with the Chair and board members to forward plan and schedule all Advisory Board meetings, and sub groups 
  • Managing communications and correspondence for the Chair and board. 
  • Organising meetings and sending out invites and virtual log-ins. 
  • Managing room bookings (including liaising with external venues), refreshments, travel arrangements and payment of expenses. 
  • Arranging meetings between the Chair, board, the CEO and other Pennies team members as required. 
  • Working with the CEO to agree the agenda for Board Meetings with the Chair. 
  • Making arrangements for presentations and internal/external speakers. 
  • Liaising with the Executive Team regarding preparation for meetings and any follow up. 
  • Collating, uploading and sending out papers for Board meetings. 
  • Keeping records of attendance and apologies and any possible conflicts of interest. 
  • Maintaining all records in good order including updating distribution lists and website with new board members. 
  • Co-ordinating the recruitment and induction of new Advisory board members. 
  • Being a point of contact for advisory board members 
  • Foster, develop and maintain positive working relationships with Chairs, board members and EAs. 
  • Provide administrative support to the Executive Assistant in undertaking their role and duties, which may include: diary management, the organisation of meetings and booking travel. 
  • Holiday cover for the Executive Assistant to the CEO. 
  • Any other duties reasonably requested by the CEO and Executive Team.

Experience and skills

Applicants for this role will have prior experience gained in a responsible secretarial or administrative role. You will be proactive, professional and able to maintain confidentiality. You will be well-organised, able to prioritise work and to achieve deadlines. 

You must have good communication skills with the ability to liaise effectively and  coordinate the work of others. You must be helpful and responsive to requests for assistance from the Advisory Board Chairs and members. You will be willing to work flexibly in accordance with the needs of the organisation and advisory board, including attending meetings at external venues. 

A good standard of literacy is required and you must be competent in the use of IT and online applications including MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint. You will be conscientious and diligent in managing sensitive and confidential data and information, and keeping records on behalf of the Advisory Board.

Business Development Manager

We’re searching for an experienced Business Development Manager to grow both new and existing partnerships with mid-level and larger merchants – generating leads, managing the implementation of our micro-donation solutions, and providing exceptional ongoing account management.

Role Description

As a core part of the Business Development team, you will work to recruit and onboard new merchant partners to the Pennies movement – helping them to implement micro-donation solutions in their customer payment journey and raise money for their charity partners.

You will have primary responsibility for mid-market to larger merchants, reacting to both in-bound enquiries and introductions, as well as seeking new business opportunities to build and grow your own territory.

The Business Development Manager will be an experienced account manager, building and maintaining strong relationships with merchant partners over time, and working to increase donation conversion rates and grow donation levels.

You will work closely with other members of the Business Development team, as well as colleagues across Technology & Product, Marketing & Charities, and the CEO, to deliver added value for your partners and raise significant funds for hundreds of charities.

Pennies’ vision is that one day, whenever people pay by card or digitally, they will be given the opportunity to donate a few pence to charity, in a simple, safe, and sustainable way. Alongside the wider team, you will help increase recognition of Pennies, our work and our impact on society, creating a legacy of digital giving.

 

Duties and accountabilities

Business Development and Lead Generation

  • Generate new leads and secure commitment from merchants to partner with Pennies, and implement our micro-donation solutions.
  • Support the growth in the establishment of Pennies as a standard feature and brand in the UK payments and POS systems market, primarily focusing on in-store opportunities.
  • Establish and manage relationships with other stakeholder within your territory, cementing them as business development routes to market, identifying and qualifying suitable merchants as prospects.
  • Grow demand for new technology partner development, through cultivation of merchant demand pipeline.

Implementation and Project Management

  • Manage the end-to-end implementation process, working closely with merchant, technology and charity partners.
  • Coordinate follow-up activity of implementation meeting to ensure all internal and external stakeholders work with the same information and follow up is effective and timely.
  • Update CRM daily to reflect all key progress and actions.
  • Develop and maintain an in-depth knowledge of all Pennies payments and other payments platforms/solutions.

Account Management

  • Retain and grow relationships through regular merchant contact, promoting and facilitating the benefits of Pennies.
  • Increase donation conversion rates and donation levels by implementing the Pennies GROW principles, working closely with the Partner Marketing Manager.
  • Cross sell additional multi-channel implementation opportunities where appropriate.
  • Retain existing technology partners within your territory by taking every opportunity to share the added value of Pennies – sharing case studies, impact stories and aggregated Pennies value.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Work closely with members of the Pennies Advisory Boards and the Partnership Team to ensure that the agreed priorities are achieved and that agreed actions are completed in a timely and effective manner.
  • Represent Pennies with trade bodies, at trade shows, online seminars, and other events and undertake presentations and speaking opportunities as required.

Planning and Development

  • Work closely with all members of the Partnership Team and wider team to ensure delivery of the Operational Plan.
  • Provide input to the development of Pennies product features.

Experience and skills

  • At least four years relationship or account management experience.
  • Experience in a needs-based selling and relationship environment, preferably working in the payments and / or retail sector.
  • An ability to effectively communicate with and influence middle- and senior-ranking personnel in the target stakeholder organisations.
  • An understanding of the retail, leisure and/or hospitality industries.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 (Excel, PowerPoint & Word).
