This remarkable achievement is particularly noteworthy as we mark Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month this March.
This impactful contribution doesn’t just stop at numbers; it translates into real-world impact, touching lives and making a tangible difference. Let’s delve into Gemma’s story to understand the profound impact of customer’s micro-donations.
Gemma’s Story
Gemma’s life took an unexpected turn when she received a dual diagnosis of womb and ovarian cancer. Despite the challenges she faced, Gemma’s journey is a testament to the power of persistence, early detection, and the crucial role played by healthcare professionals.
It all started with a regular visit to her GP, where her concerns were initially ignored. But Gemma didn’t give up, and with her GP’s help, she got further tests and eventually got diagnosed. During a routine procedure, ovarian cancer was found.
“This time has been challenging for me, emotionally and physically. It took me two years to get diagnosed – I went through exhausting and painful diagnostic procedures as I had a gut feeling something wasn’t right” – Gemma
Through surgeries and treatments, Gemma fought bravely, but her battle was not without its emotional and physical tolls. The impact of her diagnosis rippled through her life, affecting her fertility and plunging her into early onset menopause. Yet, amidst the challenges, Gemma found strength in her faith and the unwavering support of her loved ones.
“With more access to CA125 tests and better ultrasound equipment, I believe headway could be made. Until then, I would encourage anybody whose experiencing concerns to keep persisting and not settle with living with it if something’s not right” – Gemma
Gemma’s story highlights how early diagnosis of ovarian cancer saves lives, and the importance of recognising the symptoms and persisting with your GP. The Rontec campaign, supported by Pennies micro-donations, has helped support Target Ovarian Cancer stop this disease devastating lives. The money raised goes towards increasing awareness of the symptoms, running GP education modules, funding research and providing support to those diagnosed, like Gemma.
