You may have picked up some bargains during the late November sales and spending sprees, but did you know the first Tuesday after Black Friday and so-called Cyber Monday, is all about giving?

Giving Tuesday is about celebrating communities and charities; that might be by giving your time, for example by volunteering, or providing a financial gift, big or small, to help some great causes. Tis almost the season, after all.

Giving doesn’t cost – really!

Don’t think you need to make a large gesture to make a difference. Recent independent research we commissioned suggests that most people in the UK love giving, and will continue to give despite the cost of living starting to bite this Winter.

As many as 3 in 4 of us say we prefer to give a small amount of money to charity more often, rather than a lot of money occasionally (73%). This rises to 77% for 25-34 year olds.

And despite the pandemic and cost of living crisis, the majority of us haven’t changed the amount or frequency in which we give, with 50% of UK consumers saying that the amount of our donations hasn’t changed since the start of 2022 (source: Sapio survey, October 2022).

The key is small, affordable giving, that – once added to hundreds and thousands of other people’s small donations – amounts to huge impact that truly changes lives. If this sounds familiar, maybe you’ve donated a few digital pennies recently when you’ve been shopping and socialising, using Pennies’ micro-donation options.

Even the value of a humble penny should never be under-estimated, as echoed in the opening few minutes of the film from our annual celebration event earlier this month. You can watch the opening remarks from our Autumn Celebration Event 2022 online here.

Together we give

Together we give, is our unofficial mantra because if I donate a penny on a pizza, or 25p on trip to a petrol station, and you do the same, well… soon those pennies become pounds.

In turn, those pounds become hours of time a dedicated cancer counsellor can give to a teenager going through chemotherapy; or the development of a tool to help save someone experiencing a cardiac arrest; or a set of warm clothes and shelter for a displaced family seeking refuge from war.

The charities that your Pennies round-ups and top-ups support are benefitting from the collective power of micro-donations. Hear from the likes of Disasters Emergency Committee, Macmillan Cancer Support and British Heart Foundation as they share their experiences of micro-donations, and the impact for their causes, here.
